Why do people go to hell? Unbelief, idolatry, immorality, trusting in good works, sin, rejection of Christ’s gospel? All good and true answers. But let us consider one other reason: The Doctrine of Reprobation. God’s eternal decree and sovereignty even over the destiny of all unbelievers. An important read!

“If we win souls, it shall be by other arts than Jesuits and shavelings can teach us. Trust not in any man who pretends to priesthood. Priests are liars by trade, and deceivers by profession. We cannot save souls in their theatrical way, and do not want to do so…” -CHS (cp, 2 Cor 4:2)

This issue of how Christians are to be living in a worldly society can be a difficult one when you get lost in the fog of political pragmatics by trying to whitewash an unbelieving world with the veneer of “Christian morality” absent of the transforming power of the gospel of grace. The Scriptures know nothing of this kind of benign moral righteousness.

I form light and create darkness, I make well-being and create calamity, I am the Lord, who does all these things (Isaiah 45:7). One of the most common questions I am challenged with when debating with Atheists is the century old question “If your God is so good why does he allow evil and pain in the world”.

The ultimate goal of the church biblically is not chiefly the public good, but the glory of God in the proclamation and advancement of His gospel. God, not the audience, is sovereign. The gospel, however, is a stumbling block, offensive and foolishness for those who are perishing.
