SCRIPTURE READING
Psalm 96:1-13
SERMON TEXT Romans 10:5-13
For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
SERMON OUTLINE
The Israel of God (pt 8)
“Righteousness Based on Faith”
Introduction:
Three key questions:
what is faith?; what is grace?; what is God’s love?
What is faith?
Hebrews 11:1, 6;
Romans 10:17; Ephesians 2:8
Definition: Faith is the firm persuasion and expectation that God will perform all He has promised to us in Christ.
What is God’s grace?
Romans 3:24; Ephesians 1:7;
2 Tim 1:9; Titus 3:7; Heb 4:16
Definition: Grace is God’s unmerited favor through Christ, to people who deserve His wrath.
God’s Righteousness (or riches) At Christ’s Expense
G.S. Bishop said,
“Grace is a provision for men who are so fallen that they cannot lift the axe of justice; so corrupt that they cannot change their own natures; so adverse to God that they cannot turn to Him; so blind that they cannot see Him; so deaf that they cannot hear Him; and so dead that He Himself must open their graves.”
What is God’s love?
John 3:16; Romans 5:8, 5:5, 8:37-39;
Eph 2:4; 2 Thes 2:16; 1 John 4:9-19
Definition: God’s love is His redeeming, unfailing, sacrificial divine goodness, kindness and faithfulness in Christ toward sinners by the Holy Spirit.
