Sermon Text:
I Am the Light of the World
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Sermon Notes:
“I AM The Light of the World…”
This is the second of the profound and awesome I AM statements made throughout the gospel of John, in which Jesus Christ reveals His deity, His authority, and His gospel. The one before us is a powerful statement deeply rooted in the Old Testament and in John’s gospel. Here is the entire declaration from our Lord:
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” –John 8:12
This He spoke on the heels of an encounter with an adulterous woman brought before Him while He was speaking in the Temple. The scribes and Pharisees did this as a sinister contrived test to try and trap Jesus in order to have Him arrested and discredited as Messiah. Their plot failed and only proved that Jesus was indeed Son of Man and Son of God.
As we look at our text today, just one verse, we will see three great realities about our Lord:
1. His Character – “I Am the Light of the world”
2. His Call – “whoever follows Me wil not walk in darkness”
3. His Covenant – “but will have the Light of life”
We will also be doing something interactive this morning at the end of the message. I will be taking some of your questions that you would like to ask about the sermon you just listened to. You may text them to the phone number 341-8271 (they will kept anonymous); or write them down on the paper included as a bulletin insert today. Those will be collected at the end of the message and handed to me.
We hope this will prove to be a further encouragement to you as my heart and passion is to have you take the Word preached every week and see it cause each of us to love the Lord deeply, worship Him truly, know His gospel fully, and live for Him faithfully. No question is too trivial and no comment is too weighty. We need to know the Lord Jesus Christ and I hope this will prove to be a further equipping step in our walk in the Word at the Cross Church.
In the light and grace of our Savior,
Pastor Steve
