Sermon Notes:
Thinking Biblically to Live Holy
The Ministry of the Holy Spirit (pt 5) – “His Works”
“When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for He will take what is mine and declare it to you” (John 16:13–14 ).
The Spirit’s deepest longing is that the Son be honored. Jesus is the focus of the Spirit’s ministry and therefore the Holy Spirit works to advance the work of Christ to the glory of the Father, and He empowers and anoints the people of God to do the same.
The Ministry of the Spirit in the Life of Jesus
1. In incarnation (Luke 1:35 )
2. In baptism (Luke 3:21-22)
3. By filling (Luke 4:1; 14)
4. Empowering for public ministry (Luke 4:18-20; Acts 10:38)
5. In atonement (Hebrews 9:14)
How the Spirit Glorifies Christ
1. Testifies of Christ (revelation) (John 15:26)
2. Reveals Christ through the Scriptures (illumination) (1 Cor. 2:11-16)
3. Power to Witness for Christ (proclamation) (Acts 1:8; 1 Peter 3:15)
4. Bringing new life in Christ (regeneration) (John 3:5-8; Titus 3:5-7)
5. Transformation into the image of Christ (sanctification) (Romans 8:29)
6. Comforts the Church Christ (edification) (Acts 9:31)
