Sermon Text:

John 6:52-59

52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.

Sermon Notes:

Who Is Jesus?

The Christian faith is built on an accurate Christology. Before we get devotional about the Lord we must understand the essential foundation of salvation truth. It is critically important that we get Christ right. To miss a clear understanding of who Jesus is, is to miss the gospel. And to miss the gospel is to insure ones eternal condemnation. In the gospel of John, which is dedicated to understanding Him as Deity – both Lord and Christ – we have seen Jesus described in these awe-inspiring; Christ-exalting; worship-creating terms.

Look with me for a moment at how the Lord has revealed Himself in John’s Gospel so far:

The Eternal Word (John 1:1); God (1:1); Creator (1:3); the Light (1:5); the only Son of the Father (1:14); full of grace and truth (1:14); the divine Exegete (1:18); the Lamb of God (1:29); baptizes with the Holy Spirit (1:33); the Son of God (1:34); King of Israel (1:49); the Son of Man (1:51); the divine temple (2:21); He is above all (3:31); possesses the Spirit without measure (3:34); Messiah (4:25f); the Christ (4:29); Savior of the world (4:42); equal with God (5:18); Sovereign (5:21); Judge (5:22); the one whom Scriptures bear witness (5:39); life-giver (5:40); Lord over creation (6:11); Lord of the Storm (6:20); Lord over time and space (6:21); the seal of God (6:27); the work of God (6:29); the bread of God (6:33); I AM the bread of life (6:35); our security (6:37); our hope of resurrection (6:39); the Apostle of God (6:44); and the living bread (6:51).

Jesus Christ is the great I AM of the OT (Ex. 3:14; Jn 8:58). As such, He fulfilled the law of God in perfect obedience in His earthly life; He perfectly fulfilled its penalty in His death on the cross; He fully satisfied God’s holiness, justice and wrath in His once for all propitiatory sacrifice on the cross and in resurrections secured for us our justification. Therefore, sinful people may have peace with God by grace through faith in Jesus Christ by being justified by His blood (Rom. 5:9); and that His righteousness, by virtue of His sinless life lived and atoning death is now imputed to us by faith (2 Cor. 5:21) so that we are no longer under the curse of the Law; the demands of the Law; or under the justice and wrath of God. We are clothed with the perfect righteousness of Christ, being regenerated and sealed by His Holy Spirit forever! (Titus 3:5-7; Eph. 1:13-14)

As we now come to the end of John 6 this morning, we hear the most shocking of all His gospel claims – “eat my flesh; drink my blood.”
