TEXT: Daniel 9:24
“Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place.

OUTLINE: Messiah’s Matchless Mission
Christotelic Hermeneutic:
views the Lord Jesus Christ as the ultimate goal or end of God’s Word and seeks to consistently interpret all Scripture in view of this great truth. (Luke 24:16, 21, 27, 44-47)

This emphasizes three key principles:

1) the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ is the nexus of God’s plan in redemptive history,

2) all Scripture either refers to Christ directly (e.g. the Gospel narratives, messianic prophecies), refers to Christ typologically, or prepares the way for Christ by unfolding redemptive history which ultimately points to His person and work (e.g. the Flood, the
calling of Abraham), and

3) the New Testament Scriptures must have interpretive priority over the Old Testament (source: Providence Seminary, M. Kline)

Daniel 9:24 reveal six prophetic goals:

The first three:
To Put an End to Sin

The second three:
To Bring in Everlasting Righteousness

To Put an End to Sin:
-to finish the transgression,
(Ro 5:17, 20-21)

-to put an end to sin,
(Ro 6:6-14)

-and to atone for iniquity,
(Ro 5:1-2)

To Bring In an Everlasting Righteousness:
-to bring in everlasting righteousness,
(Ps 119:142, 144; Is 51:5-8; Ro 3:25-26)

-to seal both vision and prophet,
(Heb 1:1-3; 2 Cor 1:20; Mt 5:17; Rev 19:10)

-and to anoint a most holy place.
(Acts 4:26-28; Heb 9:11; John 2:19-22;
Col 1:19, 2:8; Rev 21:3, 22)
