“The Paschal Supper (pt. 3) – The Betrayal of Judas” (John 13:21-30)
Sermon Text:
John 13:21-30
One of You Will Betray Me
saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table close to Jesus, [5] 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus [6] of whom he was speaking. 25 So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.
Sermon Notes:
Thinking Biblically to Live Holy
John 13:21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table close to Jesus, [1] 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus [2] of whom he was speaking.
The DNA of Spiritual Treason
-Spiritual treason or betrayal occurs when people satisfy their itching ears rather than embrace God’s Word. (2 Tim. 4:1-5).
-Spiritual treason or betrayal occurs when people defect from the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ to a different gospel, which is no gospel at all (Galatians 1:6-9).
-Spiritual treason or betrayal occurs when people leave the community of God’s people and they “go out from us” to be outside the fellowship, protection, love and grace of the of the body of Christ (1 John 2:19).
-Spiritual treason or betrayal occurs when people love this present world rather than Christ. “You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God” (James 4:3-4). And Demas, “[who] love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica” (2 Tim. 4:10).
-Spiritual treason or betrayal occurs when worldly methodology creeps into the church and a biblically guided church is abandoned for worldly techniques. (1 Timothy 3:15; 6:1-5)
-Spiritual treason or betrayal occurs when ones own self-righteousness is trusted as sufficient to warrant the promise of eternal life (Matt. 7:21-23).
-Spiritual treason or betrayal occurs when the goal of faith is personal happiness and not holiness; where the object of faith is religious ritual and not relationship with the Savior; where the rule of faith is experience and not truth; and where the priority of faith is the tolerance of sin and not repentance. (Matthew 23)
