Sermon Notes

We begin our exposition today of the gospel of John. Matthew’s gospel presents Jesus as King; Mark’s gospel presents Jesus as Servant; and Luke’s gospel presents Jesus as Man. But John’s gospel presents Jesus as God. The message today (John1:1-2) is, “The Transcendence of Christ.” Transcendence is a rich word theologically and means, “that which is divinely other and loftier.” This expresses the great truth that the Lord Jesus Christ is Deity. He was not made divine, given divine characteristics, or special divine powers as a created man. From all eternity… He was and is God.

We will see Jesus presented in these first two verses of John as the Word – the Logos. There are three aspects to this profound title of our Lord: His eternality; His existence; and His essence. May your hearts rejoice as we begin this great journey in John’s gospel – The Word of His Love.
